Chapter 21

Walnut Creek

“I think it’s time for me to buy a new coin purse. This is no good anymore.” Lois held hers up.

Orley glanced over at her from the driver’s seat of their carriage. “What’s wrong with it?”

“The clasp is broken, and I lost some of my money.”

“When did that happen?”

She shrugged her shoulders. “I’m not sure. I first noticed it after supper when I was going to leave a tip for our waitress at the restaurant in Berlin. It was after you left the table to use the restroom.”

“I’m confused. Why would you feel the need to leave a tip when I had already left one?”

A warm flush crept across Lois’s cheeks as her chin dipped down. “I didn’t think it was enough.”

“Oh, so now you think your husband is a cheapskate, huh?”

“Not at all. The young woman waiting on our table was so attentive to our needs, and I thought she deserved a little extra.”

“I see. Did you have enough in your coin purse?”

“There was a five dollar bill, which I gave her, but that’s all I had. Apparently, the rest of my bills, plus the coins, must have fallen out sometime today; maybe when I went to the post office for stamps.”

“It was nice of you to give the extra tip to our waitress.” Orley reached over and patted her arm. “I’ll give you some money tomorrow so you can buy a new coin purse.”

She smiled. “Danki. You’re such a kind, thoughtful man. I did well when I married you.”

“I’m the one who did well. I couldn’t ask for a better fraa.” Orley spoke in such a sincere tone it caused Lois to tear up. There were times when she didn’t feel deserving of his love.
